Republicans in the Senate did not have the votes to keep the government open, as they try to pass a continuing resolution that continues to fund the government at current levels.Democrats (for the most part) are staying on party lines and demanding a renewal of Affordable Care Act subsidies, helping to lower all premiums on health insurance. If not renewed, millions would lose insurance, and many others would experience a price hike in insurance that would not allow them to afford it anymore.3 Senators who caucus with the Democrats (John Fetterman [D-PA], Catherine Cortez Masto [D-NV] and Angus King [I-ME]) have already agreed to vote with Republicans to avoid a shutdown. Republicans will need at least 5 more votes, maybe more if they cannot keep their own party in check, as 60 are needed to end a filibuster. JD Vance can break a tie if they can get to 60 votes. The last vote happened on a proposal on 10/08/2025, which failed. It was the 6th vote that has failed. No adjustments have been made from either side of the government.
